YOUTH MEETINGS OFF TO A GOOD START

Young people have embraced the opportunity to lead the formation of Ward Youth Forums which will be led by progressive young leaders elected by them.

The process to elect Ward Forums started at Noluthando hall on Tuesday, 06 June. On Wednesday, 07 June the second meeting took place at the Extension 9 Hall where a large number of young people showed a great interest to participate in the process. Youth from Wards 3 and 5 attended the meeting and were able to elect representatives to serve in the Ward Forums. Five representatives were elected for Ward 5 and only 3 representatives were elected for Ward 3. The rest of the Ward 3 representatives will be elected in the next round of meetings.

Representatives who can serve in the Ward Forum have to be between the ages of 18 and 35. A large number of people who had heeded the call had to leave the meeting upon finding out the age requirements, which was sad to see. The interest shown by the community speaks to the serious need for developmental programmes in our communities. This is something the municipality is looking into.

Once all the Ward Forums have been elected, they will all meet with the Executive Mayor, Councillor Yandiswa Vara at the City Hall on 16 June 2023 as the Makana Youth Forum. More details to be provided about the activities planned for Youth Day (16 June).
