CELEBRATING SA LIBRARY WEEK

Makana Local Municipality joined LIASA (Library and Information Association of South Africa) in celebrating the South African Library Week on 22 March 2023. The South African Library Week took place from 20 – 26 March 2023. The theme for this year was: Libraries telling powerful stories.

Libraries are facing many challenges, including funding constraints; the provisioning of adequate and relevant materials, infrastructure problems; insufficient internet access and connectivity; inadequate disaster management and vandalism.

This year libraries focused on what they are doing right and what they have achieved. The focus this year was on libraries telling good stories as well as involving patrons to highlight the benefits of libraries and in the process marketing and advocating for libraries.

Makana Local Municipality hosted the event in Church Square on Wednesday, 22 March 2023. Some of the activities planned for the day included staff in branded library clothing marching with placards from the Rhodes University Arch to Church Square. A story corner was set up for children to read stories and there was live marimba music.
