Makana Local Municipality would like to inform residents that it is aware of recent reports of brown or discoloured water in certain areas.
The matter is currently under investigation, and the exact cause has not yet been confirmed. As part of the investigation process, water samples were collected on 29 April 2026 for laboratory analysis. In addition, a joint inspection was conducted on 17 April 2026 by Makana Local Municipality officials together with Sarah Baartman District Municipality (SBDM) representatives to assess potential sources of the issue.
Preliminary assessments have indicated that treatment processes are being reviewed, including the chemical dosing systems. Elevated iron concentrations in the raw water are being considered as a possible contributing factor, as this can result in floc remaining in suspension rather than settling effectively. In response, chemical dosing tests have been conducted, and recommendations have been made to optimise treatment through enhanced pre-dosing techniques to improve the removal of iron and manganese. Raw water and final treated water samples were also collected on 29 April 2026 as part of the ongoing investigation and verification process.
In addition, distribution line flushing is currently being undertaken in affected areas to improve water clarity and remove any accumulated sediments within the network.
The municipality wishes to assure residents that this matter is being treated with urgency. Further updates will be communicated as soon as verified information becomes available from the ongoing investigations and laboratory results.
Makana Local Municipality appreciates the community’s patience and cooperation while this matter is being resolved.
