ANTI-LITTERING CAMPAIGN
Makana Local Municipality has partnered with fourth-year Rhodes University students to embark on an anti-littering campaign. This comes as a result of a growing number of illegal dumping sites all around Makhanda, particularly in the township. The aim of the campaign is to reach out to everyone in our community and to send a clear message regarding the dangers of illegal dumping and littering.
In August this year Makana LM together with local residents started cleaning up a number of illegal dumping sites and placed refuse containers on the areas where the illegal dumping sites were located. The Municipality has had to go back numerous times to clean areas that had been recently cleaned, because members of the community continue to dump on the cleaned areas.
Makana LM collects domestic refuse according to its weekly schedule. The municipality would like to appeal to residents to take their domestic refuse out on the scheduled days and dispose of garden refuse on identified municipal containers.
The municipality is currently in the process of clearing illegal dumping sites and would like to appeal to community members to join these initiatives.
