Various key stakeholders joined Makana Local Municipality to launch the Festive Season Road Safety Awareness Campaign on the N2 towards Port Elizabeth today.

Speaking at the launch on Friday, 09 December 2022, Executive Mayor Cllr Yandiswa Vara said they were there to give you support to all the important stakeholders who were taking part in the campaign. “We are starting a very difficult and busy season, which at the same time may be risky for you. We are here we support you. Let’s make sure each and every motorist adheres to the rules of the road and make sure all the cars are in a roadworthy condition. What is most important is to ensure that we deal with the problem of drinking and driving.”

The Executive Mayor acknowledged the importance of the job that the various stakeholders are doing and thanked provincial traffic officers for the continued role they play around the Makana area, saying that during the festive season more visitors will come to Makana. This is due to upcoming events such as the Makana Music Festival and the New Year’s Cup, etc. “We must make sure that visitors know that security is very tight in Makana. Fortunately we have a good working relationship with all stakeholders and we even have security cameras installed in strategic points all around as a result of our partnership with local stakeholders.”

The Executive Mayor emphasised the importance of safety during these operations. “I would like to appreciate your commitment and plead for continued commitment during this time, but in all that you do make sure that you are safe, your safety comes first.”
Stakeholders at the launch included the Department of Transport (Traffic Services), South African Police Service (SAPS), South African Emergency Services (Ambulance Services), Local Security Companies (Hi-Tec Security and Smhart Security), Makana Traffic and Fire Departments.

Some of the key areas of focus for the campaign and during the roadblock included:
• fatigue or driver fitness
• drinking and driving
• use of seat belts
• checking vehicles for roadworthiness and
• pedestrian safety
Public Safety and Community Services Portfolio Chairperson, Cllr Thandolwethu Vayo thanked all the stakeholders for ensuring that the programme was a success. “Let’s continue to work together during this festive season, thank you.”

Makana LM Municipal Manager Mr Pumelelo Kate and Director of Public Safety and Community Services Mr Kelello Magkoka were in attendance to support the initiative.
