HOPE FOR LOCAL INFORMAL TRADERS
Makana Local Municipality together with the Department of Small Business Development and the Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA) met with local informal traders with the intention of helping them to acquire funding.
The meeting was organised by the Municipality’s Local Economic Development and Planning Department and took place at the City Hall on Thursday, 23 February 2023.
Most local hawkers do not have the means to raise capital for their businesses. Many of them rely on money lenders to get capital for their businesses. In response to this Makana Local Municipality partnered with the Department of Small Business Development to provide funding application assistance to 115 local hawkers.
The turnout of so many hawkers speaks to the serious need for such support. The initial plan was to consider only 35 informal traders, but the overwhelming need prompted the Department of Small Business Development to consider all of them.
The municipality hopes that this partnership will yield good results, which will benefit even more local hawkers and strengthen relations between government and communities.
