SEWER SPILLAGES IN EXTENSION 6

Dear residents

The municipality is aware of the ongoing challenges in relation to sewer spillages all around Makana Municipality, especially the current situation in Extension 6. We would like to reassure residents that we are taking steps to deal with this problem.

The current situation can be attributed to two things:

  1. Unwanted foreign objects that are thrown into the sewer system like rocks, rags, animal skins, nappies, etc.
  2. The small and aged sewer pipeline.

We are working on solutions to these challenges.

The municipality has recently formed a task team that will focus on solving the above two problems. This task team has formulated both short and long term plans to eradicate this continuous sewer spillage problems.

Short Term

The short term solutions include robust and regular monitoring and maintenance of the sewer line as well as awareness campaigns around the usage of our sewer infrastructure.

Long term

The project for the upgrade of the bulk sewer line to the Mayfield Waste Water Treatment Works is budgeted to start within the current financial year (starting in January) and will be completed in three years.

We would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused by these continuous system failures.

Issued by the Makana Communications Office.
