Makana municipality has contracted a new service provider, Advance Parking Systems to control the parking system in the Central Business District to provide the public access to local shops and services. This comes after the contract with the previous service provider expired recently after five years of operation.

The 34th edition of the usually cold and sometimes wet National Arts Festival held in Grahamstown recently came to an end. The festival runs for 10days and is one of the biggest festivals in Africa and attracts arts lovers from the continent and abroad.

Municipality creates 80 jobs for the festival |

Eighty previously unemployed members of the community will have temporary employment during the National Arts Festival which runs from 25 June to 6 July 2008 in Grahamstown. The municipality created these vacancies to supplement its workforce which gets stretched during the festival which is in its 34th year this year.

Makana Municipality will soon host Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality when an eight member delegation consisting of councillors and officials comes to the municipality for a 5-day visit. Ekurhuleni, formerly known as the East Rand area in Gauteng, is one of six metropolitan municipalities in the country.

Council passes liquor trading by-law |

Council meeting held on 10 June 2008 passed the Liquor Trading Hours By-Law. This follows a lengthy and consultative process to ensure that all the legislative requirements stipulated in the Eastern Cape Liquor Act, 2003 (Act 10 of 2003) were observed. This by-law applies to all premises situated within the area of jurisdiction of the Council, on which a business in the trading of liquor is carried on or intended to be carried on.
