Mayor launches civic awards

The Office of the Executive Mayor of Makana Municipality has come up with Civic Awards to celebrate strides made by the citizens of the municipality who excel in what they do. The Executive Mayor, Cl. Pumelelo Kate says the main aim of the Awards is to recognize outstanding achievements by individuals, organizations, groups, businesses and institutions operating within the Makana Municipal area.

Prioritizing growth and economic development

The Executive Mayoral Committee held on 7 October officially welcomed the latest member of the top management of the municipality. The Executive Mayor, Cl. P.M. Kate introduced the Director for Local Economic Development Ms. Riana Meiring and expressed he was pleased that all the director posts of the municipality had been filled.

Makana Youth Indaba: 25-26 September 2008

BACKGROUND

To show Council’s commitment to youth development, the municipality is bringing representatives of young people within the municipality under one roof to have a dialogue about their future. The Youth Indaba seeks to examine and come with suggestions on how youth development can be best approached, and assist in formulating the structures of youth development primarily youth ward forums and at last youth councils to advise the Municipal Council on youth matters, The theme is: "Unleashing the potential of young people".

Learners impress finance guru

The municipality’s accountant, Marius Crouse was full of praise for two learners from P.J. Olivier Hoerskool, Grahamstown who today concluded their school programme known as Work Week. This programme allows Grade 11 learners to spend a week in a workplace they would like to persue a career in.

Be prepared for fire

The fire department is targeting school-going children to assist in spreading the message about the dangers of fire. As part of the fire department’s Fire Awareness programme held every year in September, the firefighters are visiting schools to teach learners about fire awareness as well as fire-fighting as a career. Makana’s fire chief, Willem Welkom said the reasons for targeting learners was because in most cases they start fires while playing not knowing the consequences. Secondly if they get taught at the early age then they will know what to do as they grow older.
