![]() A full capacity crowd turned up for a rare opportunity to watch teams in the higher leagues as the Eastern Province and Border Rugby Unions entertained the sport enthusiasts. One of the organisers said they did not anticipate such a turn out considering that the game was played midweek in the afternoon. Sedru president, Siphiwo Baninzi said the local union was worried about the lack of matches between local teams due to different leagues that they are affiliated to. He said “plans are in place to revive the Easter Tournaments. Spectators from different race groups all echoed the same sentiments that more matches of the EP and Border calibre should come to Makana Municipality. Grahamstown being a “neutral venue”, both teams enjoyed support from the cheerful crowd. The score line did not seem to matter to the spectators and rugby was the winner at the end of the day. The match was followed by a banquet hosted by the Executive Mayor of Makana Cllr. V. Lwana. Both players and officials from the two unions and the local rugby structure joined the festivities. The Executive Mayor committed the Municipality in assisting Sedru in hosting the Easter Tournament and that the Municipality would ensure that the Mayoral Cup was revived. The Chief Executive Officer of EP Rugby, Anele Pamba thanked the Mayor for his hospitality and promised that they would be back in Makana again in future. He also said at the end of the rugby season, his union would be promoted to a higher league. |
