The Integrated Development Planning (IDP) office of Makana Municipality is holding planning workshops with ward councillors, ward committees and community development workers (CDWs). The workshops are meant to discuss the new public participation process the IDP office wants to implement to accurately identify the community’s needs.

One of the issues constantly raised by residents especially from wards 10 and 11 during the Mayoral Imbizo is the tarring of the gravel roads. Residents have been complaining about the dust, saying it is affecting their health as well as damaging their furniture and clothes.

The community of Grahamstown from various sectors like the Municipality, Rhodes University, legal fraternity, business people, politicians, etc. recently came together in order to garner support for the Seat of the High Court to remain in Grahamstown. The High Court has been in Grahamstown for more than 140 years.

Tests were done on the 25th of June 2010 by Amatola Water Board for the entire Makana, i.e. Grahamstown, Alicedale and Riebeeck East.

Water quality results are subdivided into physical, chemical and microbiological requirements.

Our distinguished guests, fellow Councillors, ladies and gentlemen allow me to say all protocol observed. Ladies and gentlemen, all things being equal, it is not a common occurrence that one in one month gets to welcome three former head of states in their lifetime. Indeed a visit by a head of state to a Municipality of our size is not a common practice.

A word of caution has been issued by Makana Municipality’s to all residents especially farmers and farm dwellers. The Chief Fire Officer, Willem Welkom has issued a special appeal to people to be wary of runaway fires due to high winds in this season.

In commemoration of Mandela Day, the Executive Mayor, Cllr. V. Lwana led organisations which included the Makana Youth Council, the South African Police Force (SAPF), the South African Defence, and the Education Department and learner, amongst others did a clean up of four Secondary schools. The schools are Mary Waters, RT Mrwetyana, Nombulelo and Mahlasela Secondary.
