MAKANA MUNICIPALITY MEDIA STATEMENT

Draft Credit Control and Debt Management By-Law / Assistance to the Poor By-Law and Rates By-Law

In terms of the Municipal Systems Act No.32 of 2000 and the Municipal Finance Management Act No. 56 of 2003, a municipality is required to prepare the abovementioned By-Laws for the purpose of regulating the implementation of the Credit Control and Debt Management Policy, Assistance to the Poor Policy and Rates Policy.

The above By-Laws have been tabled to both the Finance and Service Delivery Committee, and the full Council for comments, during the month of February and March 2008. Members of the public and other stakeholders are now invited to make comments on these By-Laws, on or before 3 May 2008.

Car wash opening PDF E-mail
The newly built car wash at the entrance of the town from Raglan Road will be handed over to Makana Municipality by Cacadu District Municipality. The municipality will lease the building to the car wash beneficiaries. The partnership between Makana and Cacadu over this project started in 2005 when the municipality applied for funding from the district municipality.

Elder's Christmas Party PDF E-mail
The Executive Mayor of Makana Cl. Pumelelo Kate will host a Christmas Party for the senior citizen of Makana Municipality. More than 200 senior citizens from all wards will spend lunch with the Executive Mayor. The Executive Mayor felt it was important to show respect and appreciation to the senior citizens.

NAME CHANGE PROCESS

The Makana Municipality has set up a task team to look into the name change process of the municipality. The role of the task team is to ensure that the municipality is in full legal compliance with all relevant legislation and to assist all residents of Makana to emerge with a shared sense of common identity. R90 Million to make Vision 2016 a reality PDF E-mail
The strategic master plan for Makana Municipality’s development known as The Vision 2016 Strategy, championed by the Municipal Manager Dr. Pravine Naidoo, has received a financial boost from the National Treasury. The department has awarded the municipality a grant of R90 million and it is the biggest ever to be received by municipality for any kind of project. While announcing the grant to councilors and officials, the Executive Mayor of Makana, Clr. Pumelelo Kate said “this grant is going to change the lives of the people of Makana and the way the municipality manages it will be one of the mechanisms used to judge the success or failure of this council”.

Bucket eradication focus programme

The Executive Mayor of Makana Municipality Councilor Pumelelo Kate has declared the month of September as a start of the Bucket Eradication Focus Programme. The municipality will intensify its resources to ensure that it meets the December national deadline for the eradication of bucket toilets.

Council supports the name change PDF E-mail

COUNCIL SUPPORTS THE NAME CHANGE OF GRAHAMSTOWN TO RHINI

Makana Municipality has taken a huge step in response to calls by the President of South Africa Honorable Thabo Mbeki, to change names of towns, cities and natural landforms that are offensive, embarrassing or derogatory. The General Council meeting which was held on 13 September 2007 took a decision to support the name change of Grahamstown to Rhini.
